Each year the AIASJ supports a Student Design Competition. The competition theme varies from year to year. Past competitions include a center for women, an office dental suite, a wine tasting facility, and a design studio / residence. These competitions inspire students to excel in design, build confidence, and give students real world experience competing for projects.
Students from CSU Fresno, Fresno City College, and the College of the Sequoias, majoring in Interior Design, Construction Management, and Architecture, compete for awards. Participation in past years has exceeded 50 entries.
Monetary awards are typically given for first, second, third, Honorable Mentions, and Citations. The awards help finance the education of the students. Students are invited to attend an awards dinner where their work is on display, and awards are given out to the winners. Following the ceremony the students meet with the architects and receive one-to-one critiques of their work. This has a great impact on the students, who really appreciate and take to heart the comments and suggestions they receive. Each year the quality of the submissions improve.
Our next student design competition will take place in the Spring of 2013 — more information will be posted as it becomes available, so stay tuned.
